On a violently ruff track Daniel Eggleton in the Vernon & Vazey / ENZED 3NZ Sprint car showed determination throughout the night to achieve another successful podium finish.
Heavy rain during the week would tonight cause havoc for most drivers at Western Springs producing a very fast but extremely rough surface.
Daniel started his first heat on the outside of row two and soon moved up into 2nd place attempting to chase down the South Islander of Jamie Duff in the 19a car. With a few laps to go Allard slipped by Daniel as he got caught up with a lapped car meaning he had to settle for 3rd across the line. For the second heat Daniel would start from near the rear, but made light of the ruff conditions to immediately make two passes right around the outside of turn 1 and continue to climb all the way up to 3rd position.
“I felt confident in the car off the start and new it would stick, while everyone was a bit hesitant we went up high and took advantage of the situation.” – Daniel
Two good heat finishes would see Daniel qualify in 3rd position for the feature ‘Heritage Shield’ event. Off the start the outside row got the jump and Daniel slipped back to 4th, Midway and a lapped car hit a rut rolling right in front of race leader, American, Jonathan Allard putting him out of contention. Off the restart in 3rd Daniel would eventually find a way to navigate the ruts moving into 2nd, race leader Dean Brindle had a big lead but Daniel would begin to reel him in but not until the last lap where it was too late – Daniel crossing just 5/100th of a second behind Brindle.
“We’re really pleased with the second, being in bed most of the week sick. The track was the roughest I’ve ever experienced, the whole car launched into the air several times coming down really hard going straight through your head. It was 50/50 whether you’d end up in the wall if you hit a rut wrong trying to run hard but it’s a risk we had to take to achieve the result.”
After a two week break, the Vernon & Vazey / ENZED team will be back at Western Springs speedway to compete at round one of the World Series where 5x World of Outlaw Champion Donny Schatz as well as Sammy Swindell will join Jonathan Allard to take on the Kiwi’s.
