WATERS AND STANAWAY TAKE SANDOWN 500 VICTORY!

ENZED Sponsored young guns Cam Waters and co-driver Richie Stanaway have had a faultless weekend on their way to winning their maiden Supercar race at the Sandown 500. Starting from pole position after a stellar performance in the Race for the Grid events on Saturday, Stanaway kept his nose clean on the hectic first lap to hand over the car to Cam with a handy lead over championship leader Scott McLaughlin. Waters was able to keep a hard charging McLaughlin at bay throughout his 70-lap stint to eventually win by seven-tenths of a second. By doing so, Waters and Stanaway become only the 75th & 76th individual race winners in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars.

After celebrating with a huge, tyre shredding burnout, Cam had the following to say; “That’s probably one of the most pressured battles I’ve ever been in, and one of the career highlights. That last stint was pretty full on, and the lapped traffic kind of worked against me, and then it worked for me. We were trying to look after the tires a bit. Scotty was catching me, and I think probably gave up a little bit, so I just tried to manage the gap, and I knew he was going to come at me pretty hard at the end, so (he) had a crack, and I managed to hold him off.”

Stanaway, a New Zealander who has spent much of the past 5 years racing throughout Europe in various classes was also ecstatic with a victory in only his 4th career Supercar race. “Definitely a career highlight for me. It still hasn’t quite sunk in that we got the win. We said to each other on Wednesday that if we’d pole and win that we would have thought we were kidding ourselves, so I think neither of us can really believe it at the moment, but it’s a huge credit to our team that have been pushing really hard to increase the performance of our cars, and what we’ve rolled out this week has obviously been very competitive. Cam did an amazing job holding off Scotty there. Great result for us.”

The win puts the duo in a fantastic position heading into the Bathurst 1000, and if the performance over the weekend was any indication, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Cam and Richie back it up with another impressive performance!
