1st JANUARY 2013
We hope you all had a great festive season and all the very best for the year ahead.
Brilliant sunny weather at the Springs attracted another huge crowd for a night of spectacular racing. The new passing points system run over the duration of the 4 round Midget Car International Series rewards those who progress forward during the heats, Daniel made the most of this in the previous meeting and would so tonight as well.
Drawing grid 6 for the group A heat the Vernon & Vazey / ENZED car looked settled and Daniel moved up through the field challenging for the lead with only a few laps to go there was a yellow which closed the field. Off the restart favoured #11 USA got past the Vernon & Vazey / ENZED car and then into the lead, Daniel crossed the line 3rd.
Daniel qualified 3rd highest points behind the two American drivers, Top qualifier Peter Murphy drew a marble which ended inverting the top 3 rows so Daniel would start from Position 4 for the 25 lap feature event on another dry and tricky track where choosing the right tyre compound would be a crucial factor along with car setup.
As the green flagged dropped, Daniel quickly moved forward in to 2nd trying to pursue ex NZ Champion Rodney Wood from Tauranga. Several laps in Allard and Murphy were on Daniel’s tail and slipped by both Wood and Eggleton. Daniel in chase got past Wood into 3rd trying to catch the Americans, through lap traffic the gap closed but was not close enough to be of any threat. A late yellow closed a huge gap the front 3 runners had and it was a 5 lap dash to the line, where Daniel held onto 3rd position.
After being stripped from a podium finish last weekend due to a shock failure all involved were excited to achieve a well-deserved podium.
“It’s been real hectic over the Christmas / New Year period, we’ve being doing all the right maintenance on the car and this result somewhat makes up for last week’s shock failure. It was great to be up on the podium with Jonathan Allard & Peter Murphy being the top stand-out American drivers and to have them congratulate the team and I on how well we’re going,” said Daniel.
