This year’s TARGA NEW ZEALAND begins in Auckland on Tuesday 22nd October, ultimately finishing in Havelock North six days later after crisscrossing the central North Island.
Of the all cars competing, there is only one that has started and finished all previous 17 Targa NZ’s: the Team ENZED 1964 Fiat Abarth 1000 of Rotorua’s Mike Lowe.
The iconic ENZED Abarth is in its 18th year of Targa competition and is the current Historic Category and Index of Performance Champions, a feat they have achieved for 6 consecutive years.
After also winning these titles in Targa Bambina earlier this year, the team is hoping to continue their giant-killing performance and finish the 2012 year with another victory in Targa NZ.
“While the Abarth is the smallest and oldest car in the event, we certainly are not the slowest”, says Lowe. “We regularly beat home over half the field. It’s a great feeling catching Porsches, V8’s and modern turbo cars in a little 1000cc car that is almost half a century old”.
The event this year incorporates some 870km of closed special stages including the famous 'Gentle Annie' road from Taihape to Napier for the first time.
Targa clearly has cemented its position as the largest motorsport event in NZ, and Team ENZED Abarth is looking forward to continuing its enviable record.
